An interdisciplinary research on the theme mot, image and memory generated an exhibition project focused on the re-interpretation of the role of art as a bridge with different cultures and countries. Movements and styles, expressions and emotions meet at the origin of art in a path orientated both to the past and to the cultural development of the future.
This project, entitled Détournement 2009, is centred on a network of international artists and institutions they represent.

Détournement 2009 has been conceived with the main aim of creating a connection between science, art and architecture. The project also intends to reduce the geographical distance from one museum to the other in order to create spaces dedicated to well-known artists experienced in archiving and representing memory as well as to artists of the younger generation who agreed to create works especially for this occasion.

The artists coming from all over the world have conceived their works according to three different ideas of memory:
- memory of the art: giving a modern rendering to artistic techniques of the past;
- biographic memory: using artistic representation to reconstruct personal and collective historical periods;
- technological memory: using the method of stratification in the multi-media works.

Détournement 2009 is based on the idea of the re-composition of artistic memory through spatial and architectural memory and vice versa. The project presents itself as a network of numerous events (exhibitions, artistic happenings, testimonials, performance, stage shows, workshops and films) in the most different sites of Venice. The geographical connection of these sites thus becomes the paradigm of an international cultural production focusing on the continuity between theory, history and above all on the cultural stratification in the course of time.

The list of sites chosen for the promenade through memory is a demonstration for the richness and diversity of the historical, artistic and architectural heritage of Venice. It is also a cultural matrix for an unusual coexistence between time and culture which adds new layers of information to historical substance making it more vital. The memory of the places gets enriched by the memory of art representing the clash between historical memory and the contemporaneity of a society focused just on ephemeral desires.

The spaces which will host single artistic representations or collective and personal exhibitions are very different form each other. Mainly they are ancient historical buildings such as the State Archive in Campo Dei Frari, the garth in Santo Stefano old cloister, the atrium of San Giovanni e Paolo hospital, the Misericordia abbey and the Cornoldi military station in Riva degli Schiavoni.

Among the sites chosen there are also industrial buildings overlooking the Giudecca canal, such as the old offices in Molino Stucky and two old factories in the districts of Santa Marta and Dorsoduro.

The list of the sites ends with some of the most ancient churches of Venice, all dating back to 16th, 17th and 18th century.

The choice of such different architectural typologies accounts for the willing to show the art works not as élite production, but as a social dialogue between art and common people who frequent these sites in their every day life.
Détournement 2009 is based on the direct confrontation between artists and public. The aim is to create a flow of information between artists and all kind of viewers, from people who pass by chance and see just fragments of the show, to people ready to interact, to perceive and to memorize. This exchange lies on the concept of creating a newer and richer kind of conscience coming from the responsibility of keeping alive memory. That is why the garth of the Santo Stefano old cloister will host the exhibition entitled Face to face, where seven international architects will show their photos and works. The aim of the exhibition is to show the correct approach to the reconstruction of historic buildings and to create a perfect union between the raw material evocative of memory and the techniques of contemporary art and architecture.

The exhibition itinerary gets enriched by the parallel itinerary of the theatre of the memory, conceived by Heinrich Nicolaus. His shows will be staged in the library at Palazzo Albrizzi, in the State archive and in some Venetian theatres as well. A section of his work is particularly dedicated to the artists who influenced his artistic conscience, such as Vladimir Majakovskij, Alberto Giacometti, Marcel Duchamp, Oswald Oberhuber, Hanne Darboven, Marcel Broodthears, Marc Dion.

The exhibition will take place in two different periods: the first part of the itinerary will be opened in June 2009 while the second one will start in September 2009.

The project also provides a series of lectures open to the public. A scientific committee composed by experts on the field of arts, sociology, urbanism, critics, philosophy, together with other important representatives of the academic and research world, will discuss some topics concerning the change of our society and the fundamental role of culture in everyday's life.

The main aims of Détournement 2009 are:

- to make the audience sensitive to contemporary art and especially to the artistic representation in uncommon exhibitions sites;
- to let the audience discover the collective memory of changing places such historic sites usually closed to the public or old industrial buildings;
- to focus on an historical and political contextualization of the contemporary art works;
- to promote an interdisciplinary work between artists, architects, photographers, researchers, historians;
- to enlarge the boundaries of art contaminating the artistic representation with different disciplines such as literature, poetry, critics and music;
- to intensify the cultural exchange between private and public institutions, museums, collections and cultural institutes;
- to promote the tenet of multidisciplinary character.

The organizers have already requested the patronage of: the Italian Ministry of Culture and Foreign Affairs; the Region of Veneto, Toscana and Lazio; the embassies and cultural institutes of the countries engaged in this project.
